A top national ice hockey team has returned to Romford, at the newly opened Sapphire Ice and Leisure Centre.
The South Division 1 of the National Ice Hockey League side London Raiders played their first game, against Cardiff, at the £25 million flagship complex at the official opening on 3 February; their last game took place at the old ice rink in April 2013.
The rink sits on top of a suite of modern leisure facilities which includes a 900-seat spectator area, an eight-lane competition swimming pool and fitness suite in the heart of the town centre.
Roger Ramsey, leader of Havering Council, said: "This project has been at the forefront of this administration's ambition and I'm very happy that thousands of residents join us to celebrate the opening and that they were all impressed by the facilities available at Sapphire Ice and Leisure."
Raiders player, JJ Pitchley, praised the centre: "Sapphire Ice & Leisure [Centre] is a world-class facility.
"Being my hometown, it’s fantastic to see an ice rink back in Romford and of course the return of the Raiders to the town.”
