A former hospital site in Hornchurch is to be transformed into 290 homes by developer Bellway.

NHS Property Services raised a record amount for reinvestment in the NHS by selling the vacant St George's hospital site for £40 million.

The 11.7-ha site was declared by Havering Clinical Commissioning Group to be surplus to NHS requirements,  but a 1.6-ha section will be retained for a potential health facility to accompany the homes if granted permission.

Peter Knight, managing director of Bellway Homes' Thames Gateway division, praised the decision: "We felt this former hospital, which has lain derelict for five years, provided us with an excellent plot to build new homes in Hornchurch.

"Where there is a demand for new homes, Bellway is keen to invest; we are excited to have been able to purchase this site, generating capital for the NHS, while also contributing much-needed homes in the area at an exciting time, when investment is being given to the nearest town of Romford and the introduction of Crossrail."

Bellway plans to provide 15% affordable housing at the development.
